Master en Pedagogía Social y Cultural

Arizona State University - School of Social Transformation

Arizona State University

M.A. in Social and Cultural Pedagogy

youth soccer coach and team in huddleWelcome to the master's program in social and cultural pedagogy at Arizona State University. Our program is the first of its kind in North America. The study of "learning beyond schooling,” this innovative program focuses on research, theory and practice related to non-formal education throughout the lifespan. Our courses offer:
a) a scholarly understanding of the field of social science and pedagogy,
b) strategies and tools for conducting research on social and cultural pedagogy, and
c) skills for planning, implementing and evaluating educational interventions in different settings.

PART OF A LONG WORLD TRADITION
Social pedagogy is both an interdisciplinary academic field of inquiry and a field of professional practice. With a long tradition dating to 1844, it is experiencing a surge in scholarly and professional interest. There are many master’s programs in social pedagogy around the world (especially in Europe and Latin America), but ASU’s is the first of its kind in North America.
The program develops students’ capacity to analyze non-formal education policies and practices and examine the educational impact of institutions, organizations and associational spaces like families, community organizations, workplaces, media, digital and face-to-face social networks, sports clubs, seniors’ groups, religious institutions, political parties, social movements, and Indigenous tribal organizations.
It also provides training or upgraded skills in the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs. Graduates of this master's program may apply their training in career positions within youth programs, literacy programs, museum education, dis/ability programs, adult and community education, for-the-job and on-the-job training, peace education, environmental education, health education, civic education and parental education. The program prepares trained professionals to work with diverse populations in a wide range of organizational settings.
Faculty for the program are drawn from the culture, society and education research cluster in the School of Social Transformation.
